Con un contundente resultado de un 93% de votos a favor las y los trabajadores de las publicaciones académicas del grupo Nature van a la huelga en el Reino Unido. Springer Nature obtuvo más de 500 millones de dólares de beneficios en 2022, un margen del 27% y, además, la editorial ha aumentado de nuevo sus tarifas para artículos open access a 12.290 dólares. Pero, aún así, el grupo editorial argumenta que no tiene dinero para pagar unos salarios justos.
El personal de Nature, premio Príncipe de Asturias de Comunicación y Humanidades 2007, se ha visto obligado a declararse en huelga, la primera en 155 años de historia, después de que se les ofreciera un aumento salarial muy inferior a la inflación. Las negociaciones han estado en curso durante unos nueve meses sin llegar a un acuerdo. Queremos recordar que el CSIC y Crue Universidades Españolas firmaron un acuerdo con la editorial Springer Nature en el 2021 para “impulsar el aumento de la publicación científica en acceso abierto en España”. Entre Crue, que integra en este acuerdo a 58 universidades, y el CSIC, con 120 centros e institutos de investigación que lo convierten en la mayor institución de investigación de España, reúnen unos 200.000 investigadores en todo el país. Esto choca con la postura de Francia, donde Couperin, el consorcio que representa a más de 250 universidades y al CNRS (el equivalente francés al CSIC), anunció en 2018 que rompía sus acuderdos con Springer Nature.

El Grupo Springer Nature pertenece al gigante alemán Holtzbrinck Publishing Group (53%) y al fondo buitre BC Partners (47%) y tiene en España las editoriales Macmillan Education Iberia, una de las editoriales educativas más importantes de España, y Springer Healthcare (en 2023 cerró la editorial Investigación y Ciencia después de 47 años) que llevan años en un proceso de reestructuración que incluye el despido y renovación de gran parte de su plantilla. Recientemente se han oído rumores de un nuevo intento de salir a bolsa (diversas fuentes hablan de un valor del grupo empresarial de 9 billones de euros).

The Springer Nature Group belongs to the German giant Holtzbrinck Publishing Group (53%) and the vulture fund BC Partners (47%) and has in Spain the publishing houses Macmillan Education Iberia, one of the most important educational publishers in Spain, and Springer Healthcare (in 2023, the magazine Investigación y Ciencia -the Spanish version of Scientific American– was closed after 47 years), which has been in a restructuring process for years that includes the dismissal and renewal of a large part of its staff. Rumors have recently been heard of a new attempt to go public (various sources speak of a value of the business group of 9 billion euros).
