¡Este lunes fue el turno de Citigroup ! No, ni dictemos opinión ni tampoco sentencia, hay que proteger al capitalismo no importa un pepino lo repugnante o sanguíneo que sea su comportamiento… ¿Qué remedio nos queda ? Por décadas llevamos ensalzando las virtudes de la llamada libre empresa, algo que nunca ha existido en EEUU, y asociándola con otro mito, la democracia. Al parecer, a menos que continuemos aferrados a esta fantasía, tanto nuestro orgullo como nuestra dignidad quedaran hechos añicos.
Demostrando tal idiotez al rescatar a los cuarenta ladrones de la cueva de Ali Baba, se racionalizará usando el subterfugio de siempre : si el gobierno no ofrece rescates y garantías, las cosas se pondrán mucho peor, terminando hacia la miseria en esta nueva era en la economía. Siempre esa sonrisa del diablo en la mentira. Se nos dice que debemos reforzar la estructura podrida donde habitamos, o no tendremos lugar donde pasar la noche, sin tener en cuenta el frío y la lluvia que puedan venir después.
A no preocuparse de lo que venga ; que sean otros los que paguen por nuestros pecados ; que sean otros en el futuro los que tomen la medicina que hoy debiéramos recetar. Después será la industria domestica del automóvil, seguida de todos aquellos que quieran ponerse en cola : ciudades, provincias, y pedigüeños de toda índole, todos a mamar de la teta de crédito hasta que el ubre quede seco. Es nuestro privilegio ya que somos “el otro” pueblo escogido sobre la tierra. Estamos aquí para consumir y gastar… ¡que sean otros los que ahorren para nuestro beneficio !
Adelante con nuestro consumo ; a China todavía podemos sacarla un billón o dos… al final de cuentas, los innovadores estadounidenses pagaran la deuda… mágicamente, sin sacrificio alguno. ¿Acaso no habéis oído hablar del ingenio norteamericano ?
Insistimos en que no se nos de sermones. En EEUU no queremos profetas que nos digan lo que estamos haciendo mal. ¿Acaso no os acordáis de las arenas movedizas sobre las que pisó el entonces presidente, Jimmy Carter, cuando dijo al país en 1979 que el pueblo aparentaba tener un “malestar” ? Casi tres décadas después, el pueblo aun no le ha perdonado. De hecho, los norteamericanos le martirizaron junto a su entonces jefe del Banco Central, Paul Volcker, quien con mano dura logró que EEUU, tras un poco de dolor, emergiera en 1983 con una economía muchísimo mas fuerte.
¡Y pensar que fue precisamente esa “odiada” política económica que Carter y Volcker comenzaran en 1979 lo que le ayudó a Ronald Reagan para ser reelegido en 1984 ! La ironía de todo ello : la ignorancia hay veces que domina el saber, y hasta la certeza.
Temo que tanto los miembros del congreso actual, como los que inauguraran el próximo congreso (111mo) el 6 de enero de 2009, no son precisamente ciudadanos que les sobre sabiduría u honra, siendo tan solo, en su gran mayoría, de los que se perpetúan en sus cargos como momio ; y su enfoque en este “rescate económico”no cabe duda añadirá miseria para generaciones venideras. Esto, no obstante que tanto la Cámara de Representantes como un-tercio del Senado obtuviesen su mandato electoral postulando, en ambos partidos, cambio.
Cabilderos siguen tan poderosos como siempre, incluyendo en este régimen de cambio que escolta al presidente-electo Obama. La mayoría de nosotros, esperanzados o a regañadientes, hemos añadido nuestro nombre a la lista de bien-deseantes. Los que opinamos desde la izquierda, creemos que más que el hombre (Obama) con su visión y aptitud política, será un milagro lo que se logre. Que de una vez para siempre se corrija lo que es el centro en política, y no como ahora en que el centro de la política es realmente el centro en la derecha, al parecer sin reconocer que existe una tal izquierda algo que se ha perpetuado por décadas… apenas reconociéndose que Bush ha estado gobernando, cuando se le ha permitido, desde la nefaria extrema derecha.
Aun reconociendo el centro político legitimo, y gobernando al país desde allí, le será muy difícil a Barack Obama gobernar, y ser aceptado por un consumidor amargado, dada la mierda que ha heredado de un gobierno que no solo toleró, sino que azuzó a que el capitalismo se convirtiese en el mas rapaz en la historia del país.
Con Volcker aconsejando, Geithner (Tesoro) y Summers (Consejo Económico Nacional) en primera línea económica, tan capacitados como son, se obtendrán soluciones óptimas, aunque los problemas no desaparezcan por años ; pero aun más importante es la siguiente pregunta : ¿cuanto tendrán que ser aguadas esas soluciones para que puedan ser aceptables por Obama dado el factor político ?
Esfuerzos para revisar y reparar la economía, enfrentar y aguantar una situación económica dolorosa en el presente, es algo que no va con la forma de ser del duopolio político estadounidense, acostumbrados a una cultura política de corrupción, cabildeo, y resultados a corto plazo… esto último demandado a menudo con intransigencia por los constituyentes que los eligen.
Quienes sino nosotros, los que debiéramos estar contritos y tomar la purga ahora ; dejemos que la depresión tome su curso… aunque optemos por un transplante de corazón para este capitalismo moribundo.

Consumers, then chumps for predatory capitalism
Well, Monday was Citigroup’s turn ! No, we mustn’t pass judgment for if we don’t protect capitalism, no matter its abhorrent and sanguine behavior, what else do we have ? For decades we have been extolling the virtues of a so-called free enterprise that never was in these United States, associating it with another myth, democracy. It appears that unless we keep clinging to this fantasy, both our pride and our dignity will be shuttered.
Exhibiting total idiocy in bailing out all forty-thieves in Ali Baba’s cave is likely to be rationalized using the time-tested subterfuge that if government doesn’t offer bailouts and guarantees, things will get much worse : that it may put us on a path to misery, an unwelcome economic era. Always the devil’s lie delivered with a smile. We must reinforce the rotten structure we inhabit, we are told, or we won’t have a place to spend the night ; never mind the rainy, then freezing seasons that are sure to come afterwards.
Never mind what’s to come ; let others pay for our sins ; let others in the future take the medicine we should be self-prescribing today. Next, it will be the domestically-owned auto industry, and just about anyone else that cares to stand in queue… let cities, states and all conceivable agencies tap into this credit tit until the udder is sucked dry. Let’s cash in our claim as an all-deserving people, God’s “other” chosen people on earth. We are here to spend… let others save on our behalf !
On with our spending ways, China is good for another trillion or two… at the end of the road, innovative Americans will find a way to pay everything back ; magically, without any sacrifice to boot : American ingenuity, or haven’t you heard ?
No… we insist that we not be preached to. No prophets allowed in America to tell us what we are doing wrong. Does anyone remember the sinking sands that “honest” Jimmy Carter got himself into by proclaiming in 1979 the existence of a malaise in our nation ? Twenty-nine years later, Americans have not “forgiven” him. In fact, Americans not only stoned St. James of Plains into martyrdom, but also cursed his Federal Reserve Chairman, Paul Volcker, whose tough-love economic undertakings allowed the US, after some pain, to emerge in 1983 as a nation with a much stronger economy.
And to think that it was precisely the hated work that Carter and Volcker had started in 1979 that got Ronald Reagan reelected in 1984 ! Credit where credit was never due ! The irony of it all : ignorance often rules over knowledge, at times even certitude.
I cannot help but think that our elected Congress, those there now, and those who will assemble on January 6, 2009 as the 111th Congress, aren’t really citizens of honor and wisdom, only politicians of the self-perpetuating kind ; and more likely than not, they will add to the misery of generations to come. But isn’t the House and one-third of the Senate the elected product of this past election, one proclaiming a desired change of direction by the leadership of both political parties ? Who wouldn’t want to believe that ?
Lobbyists are alive and well, as strong and powerful as ever, in this regime-change that escorts in President-elect Obama. Most of us, hopefully or grudgingly, have added our name to the well-wishers list. Those of us on the left have our hearts set more on a miracle than on a man, expecting that Obama’s brilliance, vision and political-savvy are enough to, at the very least, establish a true political center in the governing politics of this country, and not continue in that chimeric center we have proclaimed to be in for decades, and which is in fact the center of the right ; and that this recent center-right (Bush) was really nothing but the nefarious extreme right.
On that note, moving the pseudo-center to a true center and governing Americans from there, Barack Obama has his work cut out for him. That with an economy in shambles !
Volcker advising, Geithner (Treasury) and Summers (National Economic Council) on the frontline, capable as they are, will likely provide optimal solutions to untangle and redo the economic mess we are in ; but one question still remains : how much will those solutions have to be watered down to make them politically acceptable to Obama ?
Efforts to overhaul the economy, to bite the bullet and let the depression work itself out, do not play well with either Democrats or Republicans, for they are truly committed to a political culture of corruption, lobbyism, and short term results required by demanding, often intransigent constituencies.
Who else but you… and me, to be contrite and swallow the medicine now ; let the recession, or rather the depression, play out… even if it entails a heart transplant for this moribund capitalism.
