Después de mis días puristas como defensor de causas progresistas, debo admitir que no es nada fácil vivir en este mundo imperfecto en continua avenencia. Y mi forma de ver las cosas ha ido evolucionando por más de dos décadas hasta el punto que siento necesidad de seguir mis propias reglas de deténte moral para poder tomar decisiones.
En la política electoral estadounidense, donde los candidatos progresistas son contados, o no existen, recurro a dichos de acuñamiento personal cuando llega la hora de votar. Si me siento obligado a votar – lo cual no es siempre el caso – y debo escoger entre dos hijos de puta, votaré a quien de los dos sea huérfano. No siempre, pero hay veces cuando en verdad existe el menor entre dos males. Y esto me trae a las elecciones que hemos tenido a medio camino del segundo mandato de Bush en EEUU y los resultados que han sido cacareados, aquí y en ultramar, como un gran cambio, una reprimenda a Bush. Los que piensan así, quizás debieran de revisar sus medicamentos y cerciorarse de que no hay entre ellos drogas alucinadoras.
Demos por hecho que los días imperiales de este idiota arrogante han concluido ; pero los males que padece EEUU son internos y arraigados, en espera de un bálsamo que los políticos no pueden o quieren dar. Esta toma de mando en ambas cámaras del Congreso por los Demócratas desafortunadamente solo indica cambio de personajes, actores todos, y no un cambio de política : domestica o exterior. Y de lo que ya se habla, en tono de advertencia, es que los Demócratas deben moverse ideológicamente hacia el centro para poder gobernar.
Centro de la Extrema Derecha querrán decir, ya que la Izquierda como tal no existe en este país. Y los verdaderos centristas Demócratas, a quienes se les topa de liberales, se van a encontrar maniatados por la influencia conservadora aun dentro de su partido. La maquina anti-pueblo que mueve Washington continuara funcionando como lo ha estado haciendo por mas de un cuarto de siglo. Y poco o nada se hará para decelerar la tasa de crecimiento que separa al rico del pobre. El capitalismo, no importa lo rapaz o injusto, continuará regulándose a si mismo, sin ser afectado por los buscadores “equivocados” de justicia social.
¿Y cual es este “gran cambio” ilusorio que la nación y el mundo están contemplando ? La política exterior estadounidense mantendrá su rigidez como hasta ahora, si bien se inicie cirugía plástica superficial para cambiar la apariencia del dragón imperial. Quizás una nueva estrategia para salir de Irak, aunque no se la pueda perfilar como “victoria”.
Poco es lo que los políticos Demócratas puedan hacer para que se considere a EEUU como un vecino confiable, menos temido, por el resto del mundo. Y nuestra política hacia el Medio Oriente continuara siendo escrita, como en el pasado, no solamente por calígrafos del poderoso “grupo de presión israelí” (Israel Lobby), sino también por el sentimiento favorable del publico estadounidense hacia Israel ; resultado de la enorme influencia judía en todos los ámbitos de vida en Norteamérica. Esa es una realidad de varias capas que deliberadamente, aunque no necesariamente de forma deshonesta, se pasa por alto domésticamente ; y que ingenuamente no parecen tener en cuenta los árabes, por lo menos su magnitud… como si viviesen en un mundo de fantasía.
Y poco será lo que cambie en el frente domestico. Al igual que con la política exterior, los cambios serán cosméticos, nada de sustancia o revolucionario ; nada que indique que los políticos electos se sientan comprometidos a las necesidades del pueblo que los eligió, sino tan solo a sus propios intereses. Reforma en el gobierno brillara por su ausencia y, después de dos años, los grupos de presión seguirán siendo sastres de la legislación, y continuaran pagando de forma sucinta y ambidextra los gastos para la reelección de los gandules de ambos partidos. Con certeza los contratos de alquiler para estos grupos de presión continuaran renovándose en la Calle K de Washington.
En cuanto a la promesa de la variada legislación que los Demócratas presentaran en la Cámara de Diputados apenas convocarse el 3 de enero “durante el primer centenar de horas”, casi todo será de segundo nivel, simplemente placebos con etiquetas de drogas de diseño. La legislación más importante tratando de romper la conexión entre grupos de presión y la legislatura sufrirá una derrota segura a menos a menos que se la diluya y quíte todo el sabor… y valor. Pensar que pueda haber reforma que controle estos grupos de presión es una quimera… un sueño irrealizable.
En cuanto a los asuntos “tibios” de realizar todas las recomendaciones hechas por la comisión que investigo los ataques del 11 de setiembre ; o un nuevo salario mínimo ; o la reducción del tipo de interés para prestamos estudiantiles ; o negociaciones con las abusivas compañías farmacéuticas con el fin de lograr mejores precios para personas mayores… todo ello no es sino una gota que pueda caer en un caldero que necesita llenarse hasta el borde. Placebos y nada más.
Por ejemplo, el salario mínimo del que hablan ya se ha superado, o superara para el 1 de enero, en la mayor parte del país por legislaturas estatales más progresistas, y tan solo afectara a menos del treinta por ciento de los que ahora reciben tal salario mínimo. Claro que para estas personas esto es algo real, no un placebo.
De todo corazón deseamos lo mejor a Nancy Pelosi, quien liderara como Speaker la Cámara de Diputados, y a todo el Congreso, para que forjen metas nobles y honestas para el país, y las lleven a cabo ; y si nuestro criticismo demuestra estar equivocado, cumpliremos la penitencia que se nos imponga.
Por lo pronto, continuo firme en mi dicho político de “cuando la elección ante mi es entre dos hijos de puta, siempre escogeré el que sea huérfano”. Pero pocos son.

Democrats’ turn to dispense placebos as designer drugs
After ending my purist days as an advocate for progressive causes, I must admit that it’s difficult having to live in this imperfect world of continuous compromise. And the way I view things has been evolving for over two decades to the point where I now find myself making choices following my own rules of moral detente.
In American electoral politics, where progressive candidates are rare or non-existent, I resort to a self-coined dictum when it comes time to vote. If I feel compelled to vote – which is not always the case – and must choose between two SOBs, I’ll give my vote to whoever of the two is an orphan. Not always, but there are times when there is such thing as a lesser evil ; or a way to buy time. And that thought brings me to the midterm elections we’ve just had in the US, the results of which have been touted by many here and abroad as a “major change,” a rebuke of Bush. If you happen to be among them, perhaps you need to review the medications you’re taking and whether there are any hallucinates miss-dispensed among them.
Granted that the days of the arrogant idiot seem to have come to an end ; but America’s ills appear well-entrenched, forever waiting for some serious doctoring that our practitioner-politicians are totally unable, or unwilling, to perform. This takeover of Congress by the Democrats signals, unfortunately, nothing but a change in the cast of characters, and not of policies : domestic or foreign. And the word, or rather warning, is already being broadcasted loud and clear, that the Democrats need to move to the center in order to legislate… or help govern.
How absurd can anyone get ? Move to the center ? To the center of the Far Right… is that what they mean ? Even some well-intentioned Democratic legislators will likely find themselves politically handcuffed. The anti-people machine that is Washington will continue grinding away as it has for over a quarter of a century. And little or nothing will be done that will decelerate the rate of growing separation between haves and have-nots. Capitalism, no matter how predatory or unfair, will remain self-regulated, untouched by any “misguided” purveyors of social justice.
Just what illusory “major change” is the nation, or the world, contemplating ? America’s foreign policy will stay rigidly in place, even if there is some superficial cosmetic surgery to change the imperial dragon’s appearance. Perhaps some new approach asto how the US might exit Iraq ; forget about “victory”… just exit !
Basically, there is little that Democratic politicians can do to make us a more trusted, less feared, neighbor to the rest of the world. And our Middle East policy will continue being written, as in the past, not just by calligraphers from the powerful “Israel Lobby,” but by public sentiment favoring Israel ; the result of the influence that Jews exert on every ambit of America’s life. That is a multi-layered reality that is always purposely, if not dishonestly, overlooked domestically ; and naively disregarded by Arabs, at least quantifiably, as if they were living in Fantasyland.
And little of consequence will change in the domestic front. Just as in foreign policy, any changes made will be cosmetic, nothing meaty or revolutionary ; nothing that will demonstrate that politicians we elect are committed to the needs of the people they represent, only to their self-serving interests. Government reform will be conspicuous by its absence and, after two years, rest assured that lobbies will still tailor legislation and continue footing much of the reelection costs with succinct ambidexterity to please both Democratic and Republican scoundrels. Leases on K Street will keep getting renewed… of that we can be assured.
As for that PR-laden promise of legislation that Democrats will introduce in the House during the first one-hundred hours after the House convenes on January 3, much of it won’t be of major significance, just placebos with designer drug labels. The first order of business, one presumably trying to break the link between lobbyists and legislation, will be dead on arrival unless it’s watered down to the point of being worthless. Meaningful lobbyist reform… not in your wildest dreams !
And as for the tepid issues of enacting all the recommendations made by the commission that investigated the attacks of 9/11 ; or raising the minimum wage ; or cutting the interest rates on student loans ; or negotiating with the thieving pharmaceutical companies to (perhaps) lower drug prices for the aged… all of them are but a drop in a bucket that needs to be filled to the rim. Placebos and nothing else !
For example, the intended minimum wage is already, or will be come January 1, surpassed in much of the country by more progressive state legislatures… and perhaps fewer than 30 percent of minimum wage earners will benefit from it – to those people, however, that’s real, not a placebo.
Most of us are pouring our hearts in wishing success for Madam Speaker, and those in Congress who may have honest and lofty goals for the nation they represent. If we show incredulity, or cynicism, apologies are extended ; and if my criticism proves to be wrong, I promise to eat crow… or do the appropriate penance.
For now, I stand by my political dictum that “when the choice before me is that between two son-of-a-bitches, I’ll always choose the one who is an orphan.” But few of them are.
